Getting to Know Our Agency

The week before spring break, our class held an agency poster session. At this session, each group displayed their poster and everyone in the class, plus some guests, had the opportunity to view, evaluate, and discuss each one. For this assignment, every group had to create an original and professional poster all about their agency. Each poster had to include information like the organization’s mission and vision, a brief summary of the services offered, the specific areas the agency serves, and more. This assignment was very fun because each group had the opportunity to use their creative side when making the poster, as well as being an informative project. Since this assignment called for specific information to be presented, each group really had to dive into their organization’s website and research what their agency was about.

For my group personally, we got to know our organization — “Blue Ridge Legal Services” — even more through exploring each piece of information presented on their website. One specific piece of information we found that we did not have prior knowledge of, was their Pro Bono Program. We knew that the services offered by BRLS were free but we did not know that the agency enlisted the help of hundreds of lawyers to help assist in their client’s cases, free of charge. This was just the tip of the iceberg.

Additionally, we had the opportunity to read some client testimonials that BRLS shared on their website. These stories really brought to life what the organization was about and truly emphasized why they provide the services they do. Overall, going through the exercise of researching information about our organization and reflecting it properly in a poster was extremely beneficial in understanding our agency.
